Summary


Sacrifice, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, especially in war time.

For two or three generations of Americans, "The war" has always meant World War II. All others needed a modifier: Korean Vietnam Gulf Iraq. I suppose that association, which has plenty of traction in Vancouver, won't be "automatic" forever. Those who lived through it as adults - Tom Brokaw's "Greatest Generation" - are mostly gone. Their children, the baby boomers, are looking at their Social Security options, and their grandchildren are having children.
