Winter Takes High Toll On Mt. St. Helens Elk Population
It was a hard winter for the elk herd in the Mount St. Helens Wildlife Area. The state Fish and Wildlife Department reports about 150 elk died of malnutrition and causes related to the snow and cold the extended into April.
Johnson's Baseball Path Leads Him to Missouri Baptist U.
Baseball has taken Joel Johnson all over the country. The Columbia River graduate continued his career at three different schools, before settling in at Missouri Baptist University this year for his senior season.
Help Needed to Repair Trails Near Coldwater
Volunteers are needed Saturday and Sunday to repair tread and rebuild trail bridges near Coldwater Lake on the north side of Mount St. Helens. Workers will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Hummocks trail No. 229 parking lot. The lot is near Coldwater Lake on state Highway 504 on the road to Johnston Ridge Observatory.
Gifford Pinchot National Forest - Gpnf Roads, Trails Due Fixes in 2008
Road No. 83 leading to the Lava Canyon Recreation Area was damaged east of Marble Mountain Sno-Park. The area is still under snow this spring. The Gifford Pinchot National Forest will spend almost $600,000 this summer and fall repairing trails, many of which were damaged in the floods of November 2006.
