The Columbian
It is difficult to imagine how Clark County commissioners Steve Stuart and Marc Boldt could have possibly bungled the Great Bridge Name Debate any worse than they did. Fortunately, colleague Betty Sue Morris came along to erase their giant mistake. The worst-laid plans of Stuart and Boldt illustrate how dangerous it is for elected officials to operate in secret. They elevated a mild controversy with two stakeholders into an excruciating experience for multiple factions.
Catch rules unmonitored I read with dismay the Sept. 24 story "Officials increase catch limit." The limit was increased from one chinook per day to two for anglers. Gillnetters were also allowed numerous days of netting starting Sept. 24 through Oct. 3. The sportsman may well stay home as it is common knowledge that the chance of catching a fish after gillnets have been in the river is almost zero for the following three days.

T he Penguin Nation, 75 years proud, began a yearlong celebration of its diamond jubilee this morning. That would be Clark College, formerly known as Vancouver Junior College, formerly known as Clark Junior College when it was part of the Vancouver school district. Community and technical colleges - 34 of them now scattered across the state - severed the umbilical cord to school districts with the Community College Act of 1967.
