C-W Waterfront Vision Unveiled
WASHOUGAL A hotel with conference space, shopping, offices and housing are all part of a conceptual development proposal unveiled for a 60-acre site on the Columbia River this week. When built, the project, RiverWalk on the Columbia, could be worth an estimated $300 million.
The high cost of gas has begun to change the way Clark County drivers live. Though fast-rising prices will probably spike and cool off by the end of next week, "Prices will probably never be below $2 a gallon again," predicts to Elliot Eki, a AAA spokesman in Portland. "For a lot of low-income people this is way more than they can handle."
OLYMPIA Supporters of an effort to overturn the state's new gay civil-rights law sent out an e-mail Wednesday saying they've collected just a fraction of the signatures needed to get the measure to voters. Tim Eyman sent the e-mail to supporters and the media, saying that only 8,718 signatures have been gathered. He needs 112,440 valid voter signatures by June 7 to get Referendum 65 on the November ballot.
Corps: Sea Lion Gates Not Behind Low Fish Counts
A two-day experiment that removed sea lion barriers from a fish ladder at Bonneville Dam has prompted the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conclude that the barriers are not to blame for record- low counts of returning spring chinook salmon at the dam. The number of salmon passing the dam jumped dramatically during the 48-hour test, from 60 on Sunday to 444 on Tuesday. Widow Says Her Fallen Soldier Loved to Laugh
The two daughters of the late Vancouver Army Spc. Eric Dean King scattered flower petals on a reporter's car Wednesday while their mom wept in their apartment nearby and told how their dad was killed in Iraq. Eric King, 29, a native of Florida who had lived in Vancouver since 1996, was killed in Baghdad on Saturday when a roadside bomb blew up and sent a flash of flame through his Humvee in Iraq. Three of his buddies died with him.
