OLYMPIA -- Democrat Maria Cantwell, enjoying a lift from the national Democratic tide, easily won a second Senate term Tuesday night, defeating Republican Mike McGavick, who tried unsuccessfully to distance himself from the White House, the Iraq war and the national GOP power structure. Cantwell, a freshman who barely won her seat six years ago, and moderate McGavick had largely agreed on the Iraq war, but voters stuck with the incumbent who vowed to fight for a fresh course.

Property-Rights Measure, Estate Tax Repeal Rejected

OLYMPIA (AP) -- Voters on Tuesday rejected measures that would have repealed a tax on the estates of millionaires and would have forced the government to pay landowners if regulations harmed the value of private property. With about 30 percent of the expected vote counted, early returns showed voters rejecting Initiative 920, the estate tax repeal, 61 percent to 39 percent.
