Sales Tax Increase Approved ; City Council Delays Decision On Business Fee
Vancouver's sales tax will increase at the start of 2006, adding 20 cents of tax to a $100 purchase. A divided city council voted 5-2 late Monday night to increase the sales tax to provide more revenue for transportation. But the council postponed action on a proposed business surcharge that attracted stiff opposition during a public hearing.
Business Owners Prepare for Pinch
Cliff McMillen says he'll have to sell a lot of pizzas to pay the city of Vancouver's proposed new $1,250 yearly business fee. McMillen has owned the Vancouver Pizza Co. for five of its 13 years, and last month's gross of $45,337 was nearly a record. But the net profit after all expenses was barely more than $3,200, he said. That's money from which the business fee must come.
